Public cloud is big, private cloud is bigger. This year, 25 percent of respondents said they’re adopting public cloud, up from 16 percent last year. And 49 percent are deploying private clouds, up from 35 percent last year.

Traditionally, much of the intelligence for controlling data communications is spread around a network, managed by proprietary software that comes with each vendor’s gear. In the SDN approach, those control functions are split off to be managed by one central program, which may be run on an inexpensive server system. Specialized switches and routers continue to handle other data-passing chores, but they don’t need to be as sophisticated as most current hardware.

While this outage occurred in Amazon’s cloud, it wasn’t just a cloud-specific problem. It shows that building in redundancy is critical — whether your app runs in your own data center or in someone else’s cloud. In short, AWS users should make sure their workloads run across AWS regions to prevent future snafus.
In fact, every rack in our clusters has its own L2 domain with its own unique CIDR space and routes to every other rack. Ditching large L2 networks alleviates a lot of pain, and using routing protocols provides an extraordinary level of flexibility.
